Diigo: A Review

As part of my professional learning network I opened a Diigo account.  After reading about Diigo (which stands for "Digest of Internet Information, Groups and Other Stuff") and getting to use it for a few days, I think that it will be very useful for me going forward in my teaching career.

What's the end goal of the website?

The end goal for Diigo is to provide a tool that allows users to manage their knowledge and productivity.  Diigo provides a platform where you can store the websites that you use as a teacher, allows you to annotate those websites as you browse through them, and gives you a place to contact and learn from peers who also use Diigo.

Is the user experience pleasant and intuitive?

I am still learning about the website and how to best use all of the tools that it provides, but for the most part I have found it to be pretty straightforward.  Installing Diigo to my browser and learning how to bookmark and tag sites took very little time to learn.  I also found the navigation between the "My Library", "My Groups", and "Tools" sections of the website to be very intuitive.  It might not be the most visually appealing website, but I don't have any complaints either.

What's the take-away after 5 seconds?

My take-away after 5 seconds is that this tool can be very helpful once I get better at using it.  I am impressed by what I have been using the site for thus far, but I know that the more that I continue to use it, the more effective it will be for me.  There are still many more features (outlining, creating groups, etc.) that I am excited to try out going forward.

How can this site help you in the future?

I think that this site will be very helpful for me, especially as a new teacher.  The library alone is a great resource which will help me to keep track of all of the websites that will be so beneficial to me going forward.  As I have been making my way through my masters degree I had been jotting down various resources to keep in mind for the future.  Diigo has now provided me with a way to have this list in a much more effective and helpful way.  Not only does Diigo provide the library, but within each bookmark you are able to add tags which makes navigating through the various resources so much easier, especially as the number of entries into the library gets increasingly larger.  In addition, as my personal learning network grows I will be able to connect with more people and groups, and learn from the things that they are sharing on Diigo.

  1. Hey Shane,
I love DIIGO! I am glad that you are giving it a try. I would say that many of the features I used have moved to the premium version. However the free version is great to explore and find out if it will be helpful. I have found that creating my own custom tags helps me create a list that can be shared with my students easily. I found the hardest aspect of using this resource is curating the sites I bookmark. Deleting broken links is not fun. I hope you find a use for this site and continue using it to support your professional learning.
